Ask most growers what their crop needs, and the answer starts with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Calcium rarely comes up — until a tomato crop starts showing blackened patches at the blossom end, or a cabbage head develops browning at the leaf margins. By then, the deficiency has already shown up in the harvest, which is exactly the pattern calcium tends to follow: it fails quietly and shows up late.
Why calcium behaves differently from other nutrients
Most nutrients move fairly freely within a plant once absorbed. Calcium does not. It travels almost entirely through the xylem, driven by water movement and transpiration, and it doesn't relocate easily from older tissue to new growth. This means a plant can be sitting in calcium-adequate soil and still develop a localised deficiency, simply because water movement to a particular fruit or leaf margin slowed down — during a hot, low-humidity spell, for instance, when transpiration patterns shift.
That's the mechanism behind two of the most common calcium-linked disorders: blossom end rot in tomato, capsicum and watermelon, and tip burn in cabbage, lettuce and other leafy crops. In both cases, the plant technically may have calcium in the soil, but not enough is reaching the specific tissue that needed it, when it needed it.
Why calcium nitrate specifically
Calcium is available in several fertilizer forms, but not all of them are practical for regular feeding. Gypsum, for instance, is a common soil amendment but is not very water-soluble and works slowly. Calcium nitrate, on the other hand, is fully water-soluble, which makes it usable through drip fertigation or as a foliar spray — and it carries nitrate-nitrogen alongside the calcium, which the plant can use directly.
Because calcium doesn't redistribute well inside the plant, a single large dose early in the season doesn't protect the crop later on. Regular, smaller applications through the vegetative-to-fruiting window tend to be more effective at keeping calcium available exactly when new tissue is forming.
