Every fertilizer bag carries three numbers — something like 19:19:19, or 12:61:00, or 00:52:34. Most farmers know these stand for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, in that order. Fewer stop to think about what the numbers actually represent, and that's where a lot of confusion creeps in when it's time to decide which bag to pick up for which stage of the crop.
What the numbers mean
The three figures are percentages by weight of the total product: N (nitrogen), P as P₂O₅ (phosphate), and K as K₂O (potash). So a 25 kg bag of NPK 19:19:19 contains roughly 4.75 kg of nitrogen, 4.75 kg of phosphate and 4.75 kg of potash, with the remainder made up of other compounds and, in water-soluble grades, very little filler. A bag of 00:52:34 has no nitrogen at all, but a much higher concentration of phosphate and potash than a balanced grade.
This is why two bags can look similar on the shelf but behave very differently in the field. A balanced grade like 19:19:19 spreads its nutrient load evenly across all three elements, while a skewed grade like 12:61:00 is built to deliver a large, concentrated dose of one nutrient — in that case, phosphorus — for a specific purpose.
Matching the ratio to the growth stage
Plants don't need the same nutrient mix throughout their life cycle. Early on, phosphorus-heavy grades support root establishment. During active vegetative growth, a more balanced or nitrogen-leaning grade supports leaf and stem development. As the crop shifts toward flowering and fruiting, phosphorus and potassium become more important than nitrogen, and grades with zero or low nitrogen — like 00:52:34 or 00:00:50 — tend to fit better.

- Vegetative growth stage — balanced grades such as 19:19:19
- Flowering / fruit-set stage — nitrogen-free, high P&K grades such as 00:52:34
- Fruit development and maturity — potassium-dominant grades such as 00:00:50
Why this matters more with water-soluble grades
With conventional granular fertilizer, mismatched timing is forgiving — the nutrient releases slowly anyway. With water-soluble fertilizers applied through fertigation or foliar spray, the nutrient is available almost immediately, so the ratio you choose has a much more direct effect on the crop at that moment. Reading the label isn't just label literacy at that point; it is the difference between feeding the plant what it needs and feeding it what it doesn't.
